Odd-shaped (die-
cut magnets are a valid option to stand out amongst the crowd. You might consider going with a
non-traditional approach.

The major objective you, as a restaurant owner, want to do is have your logo, phone number or food in people’s minds when they are hungry. I really started thinking about this one night when I went to the refrigerator to find something to eat and saw an Anthony’s Pizza magnet stuck on my door. You could not ask for a better chance to persuade someone who is hungry that they want pizza or pasta or Italian food than when hunger is on their mind. Anthony’s accomplished the mission because about 45 minutes later there was a knock at the door and the Old Venice Pizza guy handed me my food. Yeah, I know, you are asking, “How did Anthony’s do their job when Old Venice got the order?”
I have acquired this silly habit of collecting magnets. I stopped to look at the image of a pizza on Anthony’s magnet. Anthony's is probably 1000k's away. Old Venice is 10 minutes away.
That is what we are here to discuss today. How can something as simple as a refrigerator magnet be one of your best tools in your marketing toolbox? There are many answers to this, such as using magnets as a loyalty program, as a business card, to make your number easily accessed…to make customers call you when they walk up to the refrigerator faster than Pavlov’s dog’s mouth waters when it hears a bell.
When I started digging for more info on magnets I called up Mark Milgate at Mister Magnets to see what he knew. “Consider this, studies have shown that the average family opens their refrigerator at least 13 times per day,” Mark told me. “On average 93.7 % of the people in Australia instinctively stick the magnet to their fridge without a second thought. That simple act ;has already accomplished what most

companies spend thousands or even millions of marketing dollars to achieve! So, if you distributed 2,000 magnets to your local area, they’d be seen up to 26,000 times every day! That’s better exposure than all your phonebook ads, radio spots, coupons, newspaper ads, billboards, internet banners and television ads combined!”

As Business Cards and Memo Boards
Now obviously, the standard pizza shop magnet probably came to mind as you started reading this. Let’s think outside the box for a bit and consider other useful ways that you may not have thought about. I have on my desk a magnet that was given to me as a business card. I never thought about it, but out of all the business cards I have I see this one more than any of them because it is conveniently located. If you do catering and cater to offices, it may be a good idea to drop off a catering business card/magnet so the next time the person who makes the lunch decisions has your place top of mind.
You can also have a magnet board with an erasable area for family notes with your logo on it. Family members could write their important telephone numbers on one half of the magnet and your logo is displayed on the bottom half.

Loyalty Programs
Magnets can serve as you calling card, but I have also see their success as being used as a loyalty program. One particular pizza shop had all of their magnets cut into “slices”. With each order over $30, customers were given a slice magnet. Once they obtained enough “slices” to make a full “pizza’ the customers could redeem them for $15 in free food. Taking 10 magnet “slices” to make a full “pizza” required at

least 10 orders (at at least $30 each), which meant at least $300 in sales at a cost of about $6 or $7 food costs. Another added benefit was that the magnets could be recycled to other customers when they were redeemed.
Magnets can also serve as you very own VIP program. You can hand out special VIP magnets with bonus offers, such as free bread or a buy-one-get-one-half-off offer that customers mention when ordering. Then only issue these to your most frequent customers. “VIP magnets work harder than the traditional promotional magnet,” Mark said. “They reward your loyal customers by giving them VIP privileges, and it makes the magnet more practical and usable. You can even have V.I.P. numbered customer magnets. Again this is a great way to reward your customers and making them feel special. By giving them a magnet that has their customer number you are able to personalise the promotion and service and if you have a POS system, you can integrate their VIP number to their customer record and turn it into a combo VIP/Loyalty program.”

Menu Magnets
One of the more popular designs I have seen in shops around Australia is the menu magnet. These have several advantages. First, not only are you there in front of them, you can expose your entire menu. The key here is to state a “prices valid through ____” sentence because if you change menu prices in a year and a customer calls with the expectation of a particular price, then that is what they expect to pay. Just like with a coupon, you don’t to have to honour an outdated marketing piece.

Distribution
When issuing out magnets, think big. What you want is your magnet on every refrigerator in your area. “Magnets should be stuck on top of every new customer’s pizza box, attached to flyers, direct mail, placed on top off cash registers, counter tops, given out with change and placed on surrounding businesses counters,” Mark said. “One of the most

cost effective ways of promoting your company, and keeping your name in front of the customer is by using a counter display for your magnets. We provide a small plastic counter display stand free of charge to all retail clients. By encouraging your customers to take more than one magnet they will provide you with word of mouth advertising by giving the magnets to their friends. If you ask most small businesses where they get their clients, more often than not they will say referral and word of mouth. At every opportunity, hand out a magnet to every client; it will be perceived as a gift.

So How and How Much?
The cost per magnet can be as little as .07 to 0.24 cents and when you compare the life of the magnet and the business it can generate, it’s the most cost effective marketing choice by the pizza owner. In most cases, the magnet suppliers can offer graphic design assistance, either free or at a nominal price. Today, many are offering the option to upload you images and do most of the work online. “If customers do not have any design in mind, our graphic designers can build one for them. We provide free design, free artwork, up to 3x free colour proof,” Mark said. “Or the customer can supply their own; in this case they must adhere to the specific requirements as pointed out on our website.”

Stand Out
In this article you will see many
different types of magnets.
Notice which ones stand out the
most to you. Some of the
die-cut (shaped) magnets strike
better for some people, but
some like food pictures. You also
have the menu magnet and
memo board options.
Whichever style you
choose, first think about what you
want to accomplish. Are you
accentuating catering, loyalty pizza,
quite dining, delivery? Design your marketing strategy around this and surely you are “sticking” round in customers’ minds when they head to the refrigerator.
